Committed to maintaining small, neighborhood schools, we make an effort to meet the emotional, intellectual and social needs of a student population of approximately 1,832 students. The District also has a "receiving" school relationship with the Edgewater Park School District, which has been sending students to Grades 9-12 since the 1930s. The City of Burlington School District is committed to early childhood education and is proud to offer residents of the community access to a high quality, preschool program for three- and four-year-olds at a newly constructed 12-classroom early childhood center.

As can be seen in the individual school Report Cards, there are numerous indicators that point to Burlington City as a district which is putting forth a great deal of effort in the educational process...

  • Faculty attendance rates (98% - increased from last year) are very high indicating that staff members are dedicated and show a commitment to teaching.
  • Student attendance rates (94% - increased from last year) are also very high indicating that students are attending regularly in an effort to learn.
  • Student dropout rate (4.0% - decreased from last year) in Grades 9–12 demonstrates students’ desire to complete their education.
  • Community support of schools is evidenced by the passing of the 2002–03 school budget by a margin of almost two to one.
  • Students at the high school met the State AYP requirements in both Language Arts literacy and Mathematics as indicated by scores from the 2003 HSPA.
  • SAT scores for college admission have increased by 188 points since 1995.
  • Advanced Placement courses are currently offered in art, music, foreign language, history, English, biology, chemistry and calculus.
  • Growing parental involvement in the education process is evidenced by a significant increase in participation in school activities and parents working collaboratively with staff to provide students with enrichment opportunities.
  • Community support of schools is evidenced by the passing of the 2003–04 school budget and new construction referendum.

It is important to note that students in grades 1–6:

  • increased their proficiency level on the state assessment in language arts literacy and mathematics
  • are achieving grade level mastery of reading skills through the Success for All reading program
  • the implementation of the Everyday Math series will ensure that Burlington City students meet the standards measured on the state ASK-3/4
  • learned a world language via an elementary Spanish program in the elementary grades
  • learned Computer literacy at all elementary grade levels (Burlington City is technologically superior to many k–12 districts with 7 computer labs and well over 500 computers.)

Computer literacy is taught to all K–6 students and coverage expands in grades 7–12. Burlington City is technologically superior to many K-12 districts with 7 computer labs and over 450 computers. Many of the advances in technology are due to Goals 2000 Grants.

Construction of a new 3–6 elementary school will be getting underway during the 2003–4 school year. At the high school, in addition to recent updating of science classrooms, ITV lab and auditorium, groundbreaking for a state funded major construction project will occur during this school year.

Advanced Placement courses are currently offered in art music foreign language history English biology chemistry and calculus (AP computer science is scheduled for the future).

The District operates an Internet Cafe for students, parents and community members during the evening hours. An expanded Adult Education Program includes in-service courses for staff with additional offerings for the community.
