Introduction to What the Municipal Attorney Does  |  top of page

The director of the Legal Department, sometimes referred to as the City Solicitor, is known as the Municipal Attorney. This department, under the supervision of the Mayor, performs all appropriate functions respecting law and its impact on the City, including:

  • Advising Administration and Council concerning municipal law.
  • Drafting Ordinances and Resolutions
  • Attends all public meetings
  • Consults with Department Directors regarding legal matters
  • Legal oversight of municipal government procedural operations
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts
  • Review legal consequences of activities involving personnel, public officials, conduct of public meetings, litigations, etc.

The Municipal Attorney typically renders legal opinions on official matters to the Administration and Governing Body, so direct public contact can be somewhat limited. The Municipal Attorney may NOT render or provide private legal advice.
