Residents may benefit from the resulting improved property values, beautification, private reinvestment plus the effect of improving tourism and commercial opportunities. It is important to preserve elements of cultural, political, social, economic and architectural history which fall within the specially-designated Historic District, its individual sites and areas. The bounds of the Historic District are depicted in orange. Within the District, EXTERIORS of historic sites, structures and sections of City are protected from demolition, permanent damage and ill-advised alterations. Before commencing work, seek advice from the City of Burlington Construction Official or the Historic Commission Secretary. Residents or property owners may be directed to seek Commission approval in the form of a review of proposed exterior work, requiring issuance of a “Certificate of Appropriateness”. You may contact the Historic Preservation Commission Secretary M-F 8:30am-4:30pm You can see a more detailed Historic District Tour Map showing locations of over 40 genuine historic sites on the City’s Tourism Website.
