OF BURLINGTON POLICE
EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT

THE EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT (ESU) | top
of page
In 2001 the department replaced
the small and cramped Caprice and deployed a Ford F250
Utility Truck to serve as the agency's (now named) Emergency
Services Unit. The vehicle provided officers with much more storage
space for additional equipment, including rescue and firefighting
tools. Following the events of September 11, 2001 it was quite evident
that all towns, no matter the size or location, needed to step forward
and provide their residents and visitors with the best trained and
equipped emergency response personnel possible. The City of Burlington
Police Department Emergency Services Unit did just that and has
continued to strive for excellence.
Today the unit consists of thirteen (13) officers, all of which
are trained Emergency Medical Technicians. Officers are additionally
trained to respond to fire incidents, vehicle rescue, water rescue,
hazardous material incidents and tactical emergencies.
Officers currently have three vehicles and two equipment trailers
at their disposal at all times. Two of these vehicles are Patrol
Response Units, which are on the street 24 hours a day.
On August 1, 2006 the Emergency
Services Unit placed the department’s newest vehicle in service. “Truck
2” is a 2006 Ford F550 with a nine foot aluminum
body, interior cabinetry and a telescoping light tower. Truck 2 is
deployed on the streets of the City of Burlington 24 hours a day
for response to emergency incidents. In addition to basic emergency
medical supplies the truck is equipped with a vast assortment of
equipment, including:
- an automated defibrillator,
- vehicle extrication tools,
- self contained breathing apparatus,
- rope rescue equipment,
- saws,
- forcible entry tools,
- lighting equipment,
- hazardous material personal protective gear,
- gas monitoring meters,
- pneumatic breaching tools,
- water rescue gear,
- animal control tools,
- firearms, and
- ballistic gear.
Since being place into
service, this vehicle and its operators have played an integral part
in several major incidents in Burlington City and several surrounding
communities.
