SNOW REMOVAL | page top

Public Works removes snowfall and provides ice melt for public streets and lots to maintain passage and maximize safety.

Treatment applies first to major thoroughfares (i.e. Broad and High Streets) then to progressively smaller less-traveled streets. Our goal is to clear every street. Resources, time and severe conditions may prevent that. To assist us in providing the most thorough service possible, we ask citizens and those employed in the City to do the following at first sign of significant snowfall:

  1. Do not park on Broad or High Streets
  2. Remove all non-essential vehicles from City streets
  3. Avoid driving in conditions which may strand your vehicle and block roads
  4. Clear your sidewalks and vehicles
  5. Do not pile snow cleared in street or gutter
  6. Refrain from parking crooked, or on drifts or plowed snow piles

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY medical or other crisis requiring immediate evacuation, and your vehicle is incapacitated, or “snowed-in”, dial 911.

The City cannot plow or shovel private drives, walks or lots.

STREETSCAPE TREES | page top

Streetscape trees in public places (i.e. curbside, parks, playgrounds, etc.) are part of the beauty of life in Burlington, providing shade, shelter and a natural windbreak. Disease, decay and drooping tree limbs pose a hazard to people, traffic and other trees. Public Works maintains these trees for health, beauty and safety.

Private citizens, businesspeople or their contractors must not fell, cut, trim, prune, plant, move or remove trees of the streetscape. Rather, call Public Works to request same.

WHAT TO DO: contact Public Works Secretary M–F 7am–3pm at 609-386-0200 ext. 124. Describe the exact location and problem. The Supervisor will follow up with an inspection to assess the situation, determine need, and schedule maintenance accordingly.

IN EMERGENCIES such as storms, wind and lightning, STAY AWAY from downed wires to avoid electrocution. To prevent accidents and strain, do not attempt to remove fallen trees or branches. Call the Public Works 24 hr. Emergency TEL: (609) 386-0307 to report downed trees or blocked streets.
