The Sewer & Drainage Division treats the City’s wastewater and drainage. Separate systems are maintained to prevent mingling until treatment. After the treatment process the water is discharged into the Delaware river, 200 yards south of the Burlington Bristol Bridge. The by-product (sludge) is first dewatered, then trucked to the Burlington County compost site for final disposal. Stringent adherance to state and federal environmental regulations is maintained at all times.

Beating problems before they arise

All City-owned sewer mains are subject to a scheduled maintenance program. When any of the sewer mains becomes clogged, workers respond, using a specialized truck (jet/vac) which breaks the stoppage by using high pressure water or a cutter.

The Drainage Division also operates all storm drains and catch basins owned by the City. Flooding and problems are pro-actively prevented through a scheduled maintenance program. Division responds to clogged basins or lines, and regulates storm waters flowing through JFK Lake and its extension.

Who is responsible?

When home, business or industrial sewerage problems arise, the Sewer & Drainage Division responsibility begins at the City-owned main line, as mandated by ordinance 18-3.13A.1. The Division is NOT responsible for home sewer laterals, that is the line from the dwelling to the City-owned sewer main. The homeowner is responsible for correcting any problems occuring from the main to their fixtures. However, when a problem arises we advise you to first contact the Division. While checking the City’s main to insure it is not causing the problem, the Division often extends the courtesy of attempting to correct the problem at the clean-out or trap. In so doing, homeowners may avoid the expense of calling a plumber.

Problems?

Call the Division at 609-386-0035. After-hours calls are answered by the water department, which will dispatch someone to the problem.

How can I help?

Citizens can help prevent drainage problems and possibility of street flooding. How? Be careful during leaf collection and snow removal periods to keep storm drains and gutters clear. Do not discard anything into gratings, drains or gutters.
