This official of the Land Use Board is known as the Zoning Officer. This division under the auspices of the Housing & Community Development Dept. performs all appropriate functions respecting land use issues and City planning and zoning, including:
- Review site plans and subdivisions for conformance to City Ordinance
- Review requests for variance from City Ordinance
- Maintain data and consult concerning zoning by parcel and subdivision
- Perform inspections with regard to conformance with zoning ordinance
- Monitor variance or violation of zoning ordinance
- Refers violations to Municipal Court
- Reporting to Land Use Board (formerly Planning & Zoning) & Screening Committee

Examples of Land uses coming under our scrutiny include but are not limited to:
- Erection of a six-foot high fence
- Installation of a swimming pool
- Building a garden shed or other outbuilding
- Constructing a new building
- Sub-dividing a building or lot
- Changing the manner of use of a building or lot, etc.
We will help you determine whether your use of land in the City should come under review. Ms. Burns is Secretary to the Land Use (formerly Planning & Zoning) and Screening Boards, and the City of Burlington Historic Preservation Commission. All inquiries about Land Use, Zoning, Planning, Screening, and or rules and regulations of the Historic Preservation Commission can be directed to Ms. Burns. If necessary, she will direct you to notify other departments and appropriate personnel.
