Bristol Plant Incident Update
Wednesday, May 17, 2012 – 10 am

Below is the latest information from Dow Chemical Public Affairs.

Onsite emergency response along with area fire companies have nearly completed the removal of excess material from the damaged tanks. Material that escaped from the tanks has been pumped into containers and is greatly diminished from the surrounding dikes.

Ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate both hold a low odor threshold and may cause temporary irritant effects. Odors may persist until the material is remediated from the site.

The community has been advised by the Bristol Township Emergency Management (1) to move indoors if the smell is bothersome, (2) the incident is under control at this time, and (3) any remaining odor is from the remediation activity that is currently underway.

A community hotline has been established to provide site updates at 215-781-4600.

Bristol Plant Incident Update
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 – 2 pm

At approximately 3:35 a.m., the Rohm and Haas Bristol Plant experienced a lightning strike, which hit two storage tanks at its Bristol coatings plant. The holding tanks contain two different materials, ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate. Onsite emergency response along with area fire companies are working to assess and remove excess material from the damaged tanks. Material that escaped the tanks is contained in surrounding dikes.

Ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate are used in the manufacturing of acrylic coating products, which go into paints. They both hold a low odor threshold and may cause temporary irritant effects. Any individual who feels adverse health effects as a result of exposure should promptly seek medical attention. Odors may persist while the material is removed. The community has been advised by Burlington Emergency Management to move indoors if the smell is bothersome.
