  • What are some good tips to prevent fires in the summer?

The City of Burlington Fire Department would like to provide the following safety tips for a happy and healthy summer season...

    Grilling

    • Keep grills at least 10 feet from the house and away from anything that can ignite.
    • Never use gasoline to start a charcoal fire.
    • Use the minimum amount of starter fluid necessary when igniting a fire.
    • Never use starter fluid to re-ignite or build up a fire as flash fires can occur.
    • Soak coals in water before discarding them.
    • Store gasoline cylinders away from structures.
    Gasoline Safety

    • Store gasoline in clearly marked containers approved for flammable liquids.
    • Limit the amount of gasoline stored.
    • Store gasoline and flammable liquids outside of your house.
    • Use gasoline as a motor fuel only.
    • Before refueling, turn equipment off and let it cool.
    • Move equipment at least 10 feet away from refueling site before starting the engine.
    Pool Safety

    • Liquid and solid chlorine-based oxidizers are sold for home pool use. These chemicals can combust (burn) if contaminated with items such as gasoline or motor oil.
    • Store pool chemicals away from any heat source or flame.
    • Keep chemical containers in a dry place.
Please remember the use of all fireworks by private individuals (including sparklers) is prohibited in the State of New Jersey. Stray fireworks pose a significant hazard to public safety and can cause fires. Fields of grass are dry, rooftops may ignite, etc.
