Historic Preservation Commission FAQ     List of Categories

  • I recently moved to Burlington NJ 08016... I want to know if there is any history in the land or the house? Did anything interesting happen there in the past? Did anyone of note live there years ago?

There is a great deal of history in the City of Burlington, dating back to the first recorded European settlement in New Jersey in 1624, and further still to Swedish and Finnish trappers, and most profoundly deep in time to the Lenape aboriginal peoples. To get an idea of the stories of other properties in the City, try http://www.TourBurlington.org/ with info on over 45 genuine historic sites. Most people start by researching the house and property deeds, going back as far as when the house was first constructed or sold. The County Clerk's Office are the recorders and keepers of land transaction documents, such as deeds, mortgages and liens with records dated from the mid-1700's. They also maintain a computerized index of land records, searchable by name, dating from 1965, at: http://www.co.burlington.nj.us/departments/countyclerk/records/index.htm Burlington County Clerk's Office Courts Facility 1st Floor 49 Rancocas Road Mount Holly, NJ 08060 Telephone (609) 265-5122 Clerk Philip E. Haines Names resulting from the deeds can help one search for news articles, death notices, and other public records. For assistance in this, historic societies can usually offer some guidance, and some have libraries of information. Locally, I suggest you start your research with: Burlington County Historical Society Librarian: Margaret Frame bcshnjed@earthlink.com Historical Society Complex Open Tue. – Sat. 1pm – 5pm; Museum & Library Open First Friday of Month 6pm – 9pm. 1) the property is located within the City Historic District (See Map Historic District). Residences and businesses situated in the Historic District must apply for Historic Preservation Commission "Certificate of Appropriateness". This pre-approval precedes application for Building Permit. The Certificate and review is free of charge.

    2) Work will take place on visible exteriors– this includes painting and all changes to outward physical appearance.
