How is my tax bill calculated?
Your tax bill is calculated by taking the assessed value of your property and multiplying it by the total tax rate for the year. This amount is the total you owe for the calendar year. It is billed in quarterly installments that are due 2/1, 5/1, 8/1, and 11/1.
The total tax rate consists of separate tax rates for County Taxes, Local School Taxes and Local Purpose Taxes. The municipality collects the taxes for the County and the Schools and turns the money over to them. The Local Purpose Tax is what is used to run the city (police, fire, street maintenance, recreation, etc.).
The tax rates are certified by the Burlington County Board of Taxation around June or July. After the rates are certified, the tax bills are calculated. The bills are sent out with four stubs showing the amounts due for 8/1, 11/1, 2/1, and 5/1. The 2/1 and 5/1 installments are estimated based on the prior year’s tax rate. When the tax bills are calculated in June or July, we subtract the 2/1 and 5/1 billings from the total tax due for the year and bill the balance on the 8/1 and 11/1 installments.
