Councilman, Ward 4

Hello my name is Clayton Long, Jr.

I'm a long-term Ward 4 resident of Burlington City for 68 years. I was born and raised on E. Pearl St. until moving to 1115 Wood St. in 1963 into Ward 4. The values I learned growing up in this community in sports, church and work have shaped every part of my life. From discipline and teamwork to respect and service, Burlington City shaped the foundation that carried me through my military service, my career, and my personal journey in life. My ultimate goal is for Burlington City to Be the Best City Community in New Jersey. I believe Burlington City has the potential to be one of the vibrant and most welcoming communities in New Jersey. Our history of diversity and the dedication of and to our residents gives us everything we need to grow and thrive. I envision a city where people of all backgrounds, political persuasions work "together" with respect and shared purpose.

I will serve for a portion of an unexpired term. As the Councilmember of Ward 4, I represent the interest of the City residents of Voting Ward 4 [See Voting Wards], the area commonly referred to as Farnerville, East Farnerville, and part of Mehlville.

I will be serving Burlington March 17, 2026 - 2026 General Election.

Duties

Council members perform all appropriate functions with respect to City legislation, including:
  • Preparation of Municipal Budget
  • Writing and Passage of Ordinances to govern the City
  • Voicing concerns and complaints of constituents (City Ward 4 residents)
  • Serving as liaison to Council-appointed boards

Community

My hope is for Burlington City to be known as a place of opportunity, fairness, and unity. A city where families feel supported, young people see a future, and elders are honored. Iron envisions a community where open conversation and collaboration guide our progress.

I am honored to be part of the Burlington City Council, and I will do everything in my power to help make Burlington City, New Jersey, a place where everyone feels welcome and proud to call home.

Education

I am a proud graduate of Burlington City High School, Class of 1976, Rider University, University of Phoenix and DeVry University. I also possess 2 years in both Medical Billing Coding and Paralegal Studies.

Employment

The first job I ever worked was with the Burlington City Department of Recreation as a kid, every summer assisting in playground management for the youth. I built a distinguished and diverse career grounded in service, technical expertise, and a commitment to helping others. My professional journey began in the United States military, where I served as USAF Air Traffic Controller. As military personnel I developed the discipline, leadership, and responsibility that would guide throughout life.

After completing military service, I transitioned into the private sector, joining Dow Chemical as a R&D chemical technician for 17 years. I transitioned to Caterpillar Inc., where I worked in engineering sales, specializing in large industrial equipment and electrical power systems. My ability to understand complex technical products and communicate their value made me a trusted resource for clients and colleagues alike. Clayton later continued this work with Kohler, expanding his experience in industrial-grade power solutions and strengthening his reputation in the engineering and equipment field. My final chapter was to work with the Veterans Administration as an advocate assisting Veterans to acquire VA Benefits My roles in all companies showcased skill in bridging technical knowledge with customer needs, making me an effective and respected technical, sales and service professional.

Perspective

To serve the City of Burlington and its citizens in a civic compacity to assist to promote a healthy community.
